In Memoriam Art World Figures Who Died In 2023

A special mention to my Art Teacher when I was a young lad in Barranquilla, Colombia during the La Cueva years.

Fernando Botero, a Colombian artist whose paintings peopled with full-figured members of the elite achieved international fame, opening doors for many Latin Americans after him, died in September at 91. Botero’s paintings of Colombian governmental officials and clergy are now known the world over.

How Is Artificial Intelligence Changing Art History

AI image-generators have got art historians in a twist, as more artists make use of these tools to inform their practice.

People get up in arms whenever the hand of the artist is detached from the final artwork. “Are photographs real art?” they muttered in the 19th Century. “God I hate this Pollock guy,” cried haters witnessing a splattered canvas that the artist seemingly never touched. So it’s no wonder that AI image-generators have got art historians in a twist, as more artists make use of these tools to inform their practice. I love diving into what gets people’s blood boiling in the art world, and this summer AI crept its way onto the leaderboard of irritants. But why? And what might it teach us about art history and visual consumption?

DALL-E 2, a text-to-image AI generation program, went live to audiences this autumn. The initial version of the model — which takes its tongue-in-cheek name from Disney’s lovable 2008 robot WALL-E and the Surrealist...

15 Works That Sold At This Years Art Basel Miami Beach

During Art Basel Miami Beach’s VIP opening on Tuesday, the fair came back in full force after a pandemic-necessitated hiatus. The show unfolded in the usual fashion, with blue-chip dealers such as Hauser & Wirth and Pace making seven-figure sales, alongside newer vendors that brought emerging artists to the spotlight. “A confluence of the fair and various NFT events has brought new crowds to the city and created new interest in the fair,” said Pace’s president and CEO, Marc Glimcher, in a statement to ARTnews. Below, a list of the some of the top sales made on the first day of this year’s edition of the fair.

Julie Mehretu at White Cube (enclosed picture)
Among the most expensive works sold from White Cube’s booth was an untitled abstract canvas by Julie Mehretu made in 1999. It went for $4 million, as did another painting by Mark Bradford for the same price. The dealer also placed works by Andreas Gursky, Theaster Gates, and David Altmejd with buyers during...

Pace Gallery Ups Its NFT Game With New Charity Project Encouraging People To Pass The Baton

Since Pace Gallery announced in July that it launch its very own NFT platform, observers in the art world, tech, and beyond have been eager to see how one of the world’s largest galleries might approach this new endeavor. Next week, the gallery will launch that platform, called Pace Verso, and then a new charity project by artist Glenn Kaino at the end of the month.

Catering specifically to artists on the gallery’s roster, which includes the likes of Torkwase Dyson, Jeff Koons, and Maya Lin, Pace Verso will present a selection of curated digital projects on blockchain. Headed by Christiana Ine-Kimba Boyle, Pace’s head of digital sales, the platform will launch on November 22 with NFTs created from Lucas Samaras’s “XYZ” series (2021). Then on November 29, ahead of Art Basel Miami Beach, NFTs from Kaino and DRIFT (Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta) will also be available on Pace Verso.

Why NFTs Are The Future Of Creative Expression

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have received plenty of media attention, but their significance goes beyond selling digital artworks or tweets to changing how people share ideas forever

By Sponsored Content 21/09/2021

Throughout history, artists have always been at the forefront of change, leading the way through cultural, political, and economic shifts. The introduction of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) to mainstream society is no different.

While the term itself may be associated with a certain type of asset, specifically crypto art, what NFT actually refers to is a technological element assigned to any type of media that links it to a blockchain, rendering it permanent and unique.

NFTs will change the way people share ideas forever. In this digital age, the ability to verify actions, authenticity, and origin is priceless. Beyond that, NFTs empower creators to capture and share their digital expressions on their own terms. The walls between artists, galleries, and...

The Defining Artworks Of 2020

The Defining Artworks Of 2020

For much of this year, galleries, museums, and art spaces across the world were shuttered by Covid-19. Although art remained locked away from public view, that didn’t mean artists weren’t busy at work, crafting paintings, sculptures, photographs, films, videos, and more that spoke to the mood of 2020. Whether in the form of film anthologies released digitally or protest-minded projects that took place outside the walls of art spaces entirely, artists continued to mine new territory and, in the process, redefine what art could be.

This list below surveys the 20 works that came to define this year. Included in it are new works responding directly to the pandemic and the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd at the end of May. Some works created to address such topics were fleeting and glimpsed only for a short period of time; others are permanent and will likely be seen by many in the years to come. By tackling collective fears...

Why Should We Study For A Future That Has Been Taken From Us

How can I stand by to look at what the future of my Grandchildren will be without doing my part?

The kids of planet Earth are saying that they’ve been forced to become the adults because the adults of planet Earth are acting like spoiled children. The children are more grown up than the adults because the adults turned into the needy, selfish children. Those wise and beautiful and defiant children are telling us adults to…grow up.

Shameful As U.S. Government Shutdown Forces Museums To Shutter, Artists Respond

January 3rd, 2019
By Andrew Russeth POSTED 01/02/19 2:07 pm

In Washington, D.C.’s museum world, 2019 is beginning with a whimper.

As the partial shutdown of the federal government enters its second full week, all Smithsonian museums and many other agencies in D.C. and beyond have shuttered for lack of funds, or are getting ready to close for an indefinite period. Among those closed on Wednesday were the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the National Air and Space Museum, and the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.; the National Museum of the American Indian in D.C. and New York; and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.

The National Gallery of Art, which is not part of the Smithsonian but receives significant government funding, was open, but if legislation is not passed to provide funding by midnight tonight, it will also close Thursday, according to a press representative. [Update, January 3: The NGA closed on Thursday.]...
